Continuing our profile of the three Works on Canvas artists currently painting inside the KedsWhitney windows at Bloomingdale’s, I had the chance to speak with Santiago, Chile native Natalia Yovane last week.

Natalia received both her BFA and MFA degrees from the School of Visual Arts here in New York City. When not at work on her craft, Natalia spends her time assisting artist Marilyn Minter.

When I met Natalia, she was overwhelmed with excitement to be working with Keds, the Whitney Museum of American Art and Bloomingdale’s.  I asked her what she thought about public art and she quoted Keith Haring saying that ‘art is for everybody.’  Her creative style leans toward graphic shapes and lines with some recurring themes. She said that she is looking forward to collaborating with Erica and Jee on canvas to see the fusion of their collective spirits.

After two fantastic weeks of creative collaboration in the KedsWhitney Windows at Bloomingdale’s, Erica Greenwald, Jee Young Choi and Natalia Yovane will set down their brushes this evening at 8 pm.

Originally from South Korea, Jee Young Choi is the second artist I interviewed last week in our series profiling the Works on Canvas artists who are creating art inside the KedsWhitney windows at Bloomingdale’s on 59th Street through July 21st.

With a background in Eastern Painting at Chung-Ang University in South Korea, Jee came stateside to attend the MFA program at Boston University.

We chatted about her art style, which she said represents the female emotional experience.  Jee’s art evokes sensual femininity with delicate patterns.  I asked her about what elements will be inspiring her art work over the course of the Works on Canvas program, and she said she will be capturing certain moments from daily life outside the windows as well as being inspired by the other two artists.

Yesterday marked the beginning of the second week of Works on Canvas in the KedsWhitney Windows at Bloomingdale’s, and the artists are making amazing progress! Check out the photos above to see the fruits of their collaboration thus far.

Last week, I met and interviewed Erica Greenwald, one of the three emerging artists living in the KedsWhitney Windows at Bloomingdale’s as a part of Works on Canvas.  Originally from Longwood, FL, Erica is now a New Yorker studying for her MFA at Hunter College.

I chatted with Erica for a bit, asking what kind of art she will be creating over next two weeks. She said to expect something that explores the fragility of our human relationships to each other, our world and our common history. It will be interesting to see how Erica translates these ideas to canvas over the next week and a half. Click on the video above to check out our interview.

We stopped by the KedsWhitney Windows at Bloomingdale’s this weekend to see what Natalia, Jee and Erica have been working on. Check out the photos above to see their progress.

Natalia came outside just as she was taking her break and told us how much fun she’s having. “The best part is the little kids who come by and put notes up against the window,” she said. “They’re so cute.”

The humidity and intense heat yesterday didn’t stop passersby from taking a break from their morning commute to peek at the KedsWhitney window displays at Bloomingdale’s 59th Street and Lexington Avenue flagship location.

Spectators shuffled between three windows featuring, respectively, the KedsWhitney Collection by Jenny Holzer, three MFA students creating original works of art, and a touchscreen Keds customizer.

I had the opportunity to speak with several participants off the street about their experience using the Design Your Own Keds display.

“This is so much fun,” said one designer who opted to finish her design at home and emailed it to herself. “The window caught my eye from across the street and I had to come over and see what the deal was.”

Another woman, who remembered wearing Keds when she was younger, said she was excited that she could customize every part of the shoe – including the trim and the eyelets.

Head to midtown Manhattan before July 21st and check out the KedsWhitney Windows at Bloomingdale’s to design your own pair, and don’t forget to check in on Foursquare for great deals. I promise you won’t be disappointed!

On Tuesday, Keds took the three Works on Canvas winners to Pearl Paint so that they could stock up on supplies needed for the live art installation now taking place in the KedsWhitney Windows at Bloomingdale’s. Check out the photos from the trip above.
